how can you tell if the torque converter is going out?
when i put the car in drive or reverse the car stalls, someone tells me it is the torque, and another person tells me it is electrical problems. the car is a 1994 ford thunderbird, and has 110000 miles. when going speed limit drives fine and shifts fine. but when first starting off and it wants to stall the battery guage goes nuts.
When a torque converter goes out, it has a hard time delivering any power to the transmission and down the drive shaft to your wheels so you'd hear the engine rev but no "torque".
Your detail description sounds more like a tuneup issue. Is the idle too low to turn the torque converter? That is engaged when you shift from park to drive or reverse.
