1989 Ford Ranger - Alternator or Other Charging Issues?
My 1989 Ford Ranger battery died after sitting for a few months. I jump started the truck, but noticed it would not run without jumper cables staying connected to the truck from another car.
I replaced the alternator and the voltage regulator (which was already mounted on the new alternator). The truck's "battery light" is still on, the truck will not charge the old battery, and the truck still turns off immediately after I disconnect the jumper cables from the truck battery.
Does this sound like it is simply a dead battery? Shouldn't the truck continue to run once it is jumped because it is running off of the new alternator even if the battery is dead? Any suggestions are appreciated!

many fords even until the late 80s run an external voltage regulator on the right inside front fenderwell. if your truck has one, the alternator with a built in one will not help you. i would also check the engine grounding points. regarless if your battery is dead, the truck should run on the alternator alone. so you still have a power generation problem.
