Locker Differential

How do you weld your differential to make it locked?
I was told by a couple people that if you remove the diff. cover and clean everything with brake fluid and dry it then make little tack welds on the spider gears or something that it will make it a full time locked diff. Ive seen people do it but I don't know what to tack weld. I have a mud buggy and it has a open rear end and I dont want to pay 900 dollars for a locker. Can someone shed some light on this subject?
i've done this a few times before and it seems to work well for off road use however if you plan to drive your vehicle on the road AT ALL then you dont want to do this. on road your vehicle will always trail straight even when you try to turn hard and it will wear out your tires. but offroad this application is simply awesome and cheap. first you will drain your chunks fluid and remove the diff. cover. you will need to clean everything with BREAK CLEANER not brake fluid and let it dry. now wipe everything off and then you will make several tack welds on the spider gears. now a tack weld is a weld that is only about half and inch long however it is a full penetration hot weld. this is typically done with an arc welder however a mig welder will work but you need to make 1 inch long welds with a mig welder so that it is equally strong. to tack weld you simply strike a bead in one spot and make a full penetration weld in only a half to one inch long line. then you move an inch or so and make another tack weld, then move another inch or so and make another, and so on until you've went all the way around the spider gear. then you do the other spider gear. there will be two spider gears and these are the gears on the inside of the actual differential body and you will be easily able to identify these from any diagram of your rearend that you can get off the internet for free. by the way, you will need to have the axle suspended on jack stands so that you can rotate the differential to get to the spider gears. once you have welded the spider gears you will need to clean the welds off with a wire brush and clean them with break cleaner again to get rid of all the welding slag. then you can replace the diff. cover and gasket and refill your gear oil. hope this helps. good luck.
